Basic Life Support Participant’s Manual

This manual is a comprehensive reference textbook that provides the clinical foundation for the Basic Life Support r.25 (BLS) program. In addition to 7 chapters that include content specific to BLS, step-by-step skill sheets and code cards are provided in this textbook. The skill sheets can be used as guides in a real-life resuscitation event and referred to during the in-person portion of the BLS class during skill practice. The code cards can be used in a resuscitation event and during the in-person portion of the BLS class during scenario practice and testing. Successful BLS course completion is dependent on a firm understanding of the content included in this participant’s manual.

The BLS program provides foundational basic life support information to quickly recognize cardiac arrest, provide high-quality CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to improve patient outcomes. It also addresses other life-threatening emergencies that can lead to cardiac arrest if not promptly managed. These include respiratory arrest, drowning, opioid overdose, myocardial infarction, life-threatening bleeding and obstructed airway. The participant’s manual is designed to serve as both an in-class tool and as a reference after the course is complete.

The content in this material is consistent with the 2025 evidence-based science from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), the American Red Cross Healthcare Guidelines and the most current science and treatment recommendations from the global scientific community.
