Additional Information
Description
This manual is a comprehensive reference textbook that provides the clinical foundation for the Basic Life Support r.25 (BLS) program. In addition to 7 chapters that include content specific to BLS, step-by-step skill sheets and code cards are provided in this textbook. The skill sheets can be used as guides in a real-life resuscitation event and referred to during the in-person portion of the BLS class during skill practice. The code cards can be used in a resuscitation event and during the in-person portion of the BLS class during scenario practice and testing. Successful BLS course completion is dependent on a firm understanding of the content included in this participant’s manual.

The BLS program provides foundational basic life support information to quickly recognize cardiac arrest, provide high-quality CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to improve patient outcomes. It also addresses other life-threatening emergencies that can lead to cardiac arrest if not promptly managed. These include respiratory arrest, drowning, opioid overdose, myocardial infarction, life-threatening bleeding and obstructed airway. The participant’s manual is designed to serve as both an in-class tool and as a reference after the course is complete.

The content in this material is consistent with the 2025 evidence-based science from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), the American Red Cross Healthcare Guidelines and the most current science and treatment recommendations from the global scientific community. The emergency care procedures outlined reflect the standard of knowledge and accepted emergency practices in the United States at the time this material was published. It is the reader’s responsibility to stay informed of changes in emergency care procedures.
