When someone needs CPR, minutes matter. Unfortunately, people often hesitate to perform CPR on women because of myths or fears. That leads to lower survival rates for women who experience cardiac arrest. Here’s why you shouldn’t hesitate to perform CPR regardless of gender.

Among cardiac arrests that happen in public, men have significantly increased odds of receiving bystander CPR compared with women. When a woman experiences cardiac arrest, she requires the help of another person to use their lifesaving CPR skills. And that could be you.

It's essential to know CPR and be prepared to help all victims of cardiac arrest despite gender. Properly performing CPR may result in broken ribs or other injuries. That's normal. You shouldn't worry about hurting someone when giving CPR, as it requires sufficient pressure on the chest in order to mimic the heart's action. Bruising or broken bones happen regardless of the build of the person. In fact, the worst thing you can do is nothing.

The steps involved in performing CPR on women and men are exactly the same. If called upon to act, remember that moments matter. CPR doubles or triples a person's chance of survival. You could be saving a life.

The Red Cross Store offers a female manikin to transform your CPR/AED training and help improve CPR survival rates in women. You can add this manikin to your training or supplement your existing Prestan Professional manikins with the female manikin skins or accessory.
